IOC mourns Romero, founder of Olympic relay service company

Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, December 27 (reporter Shan Lei Jiye) Manolo Romero, one of the most important figures in the history of Olympic Broadcasting, the founder and former CEO of OBS, passed away a few days ago. On the 27th, IOC President Bach expressed deep sorrow for Romero’s death and called him a “legend and pioneer” in the broadcast of sports events “.

The importance of OBS is self-evident as an organization that provides Olympic broadcasting and television public signals to the world’s Olympic rights broadcasters. The International Olympic Committee said on its official website that it was deeply saddened by Romero’s death. OBS was founded by the International Olympic Committee in 2001 and served as the main broadcaster in the Olympic Games, Winter Olympics and youth Olympic Games. Romero led OBS’s work until 2012. He revolutionized the method of how to present large-scale sports competitions to audiences. The relay mode he founded was the basis for all subsequent relay organizations to work.

Romero was born in Spain. He worked in a Spanish TV station in the early days. His first participation in the Olympic report was in the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. Through long-term cooperation with major broadcasters in the world, Romero put forward the concept of “main broadcaster” for the first time at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

According to his assumption, the TV broadcast of the whole Olympic Games is jointly produced by TV personnel from many countries, renting TV broadcast equipment from many countries, and collecting TV management talents from the world at the same time, form a team to produce signals. This mode saves the “starting from scratch” of each Olympic Games broadcast, and can also offer more professional and better-looking game broadcast to TV audiences around the world. This idea became a reality in Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Professional relay teams from different countries (regions) jointly completed the relay work of that Olympic Games and achieved great success. In 2001, the International Olympic Committee established OBS according to this relay mode.

“Manolo Romero left indelible traces on the Olympic relay work. As the founder of the Olympic relay service, Manolo is a legend and pioneer in the field of sports relay, his foresight has been recognized all over the world.” Bach commented on Romero like this.
