Sapporo, Japan, will suspend the promotion of the 2030 Winter Olympics

Xinhua News Agency, Tokyo, December 21 (Reporter Prince Jiang) affected by the corruption case of Tokyo Olympic Games, the mayor of Sapporo, Qiu Yuanke, said before Guangri that the promotion activities of Sapporo’s bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games would be suspended, but he also promised that Sapporo would not withdraw from the bid.

Qiu Yuanke Guang said at a press conference that Sapporo was very clear that the bidding activities could not be promoted now, because it was necessary to re-evaluate the bidding and show this sincerity to the world, all this should start with the corruption case of Tokyo Olympic Games. He said that Sapporo would suspend all active promotion activities before re-evaluating the bidding activities and gaining public understanding.

However, Qiu Yuanke Guang also said that Sapporo would not withdraw from the bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics, but the current primary task is to ensure the integrity of the bidding process and dispel all public doubts.

The Governor of Hokkaido Suzuki Zhidao said last week that the corruption case of Tokyo Olympic Games was a huge blow to Sapporo’s Olympic bid, and it was “very difficult” to continue to promote the bid “.

Since August this year, Takahashi, a former member of the executive committee of Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, has been arrested for several times on suspicion of accepting huge bribes, and the snowball of bribery cases has been rolling bigger and bigger. In order to obtain the sponsorship qualification of the Olympic Games, there were seven enterprises suspected of bribing Takahashi. The bribery case had a very negative impact on Sapporo’s bid. The Japanese Olympic Committee president Yamashita Taiyu and qiuyuanke Guangyuan planned to lead a delegation to visit the IOC headquarters in mid-September, but canceled the visit before departure.

An official working in Sapporo Olympic bid committee told reporters that they are expected to release a new bid plan next spring.

In 1972, Sapporo became the first Asian city to host the Winter Olympics. Before the corruption case of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee was exposed, Sapporo was also considered as the biggest hot spot to win the right to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. In addition to Sapporo, other bidding cities include Salt Lake City in the United States and Vancouver in Canada.

The IOC originally planned to vote for the host city of the 2030 Winter Olympics in 2023, but on December 6, it suddenly announced that the vote would be postponed on the grounds of “climate change”.
